In Bed With Amelie Mancini
Creative juices can start flowing at any hour, but you’ll get the most out of your day if you have the perfect place to catch some shut-eye. We spent the afternoon with painter and designer Amelie Mancini (and Ladybird) in her perfect Brooklyn bedroom.
First, introduce yourself! What do you do?
I’m a painter, printmaker and textile designer. (Check out her website!)
Tell us about your artistic background and growing up in France.
I come from a family where everybody seems to be either a doctor or an artist: painters, musicians, actors, writers, makers… Growing up it seemed very normal to be into the arts, and my parents encouraged us when my siblings and I all decided we wanted to pursue artistic careers. My brother is a musician, my sister makes graphic novels and I run my own business making printed textiles and home goods.
Where do you live now?
We live in Brooklyn, near the Botanic Gardens.
What’s your husband’s name and what does he do?
Rami Metal, and he works for the Department of Transportation of NYC.
We (and most likely everyone reading this interview) love the paint color in your bedroom. Where is it from?
We used Behr’s Dragonfly in matte!
What’s your cat’s name and how long have you had him/her?
Our cat is about 7 years old, my husband adopted her when she was a little kitten and named her Ladybird because he’s a huge LBJ nerd. But we usually call her Bird, sometimes Catpants.
What was your favorite bedtime story as a kid?
The ones my grandmother would make up for me. They usually involved a fearless princess who traveled the world and fought dragons and met all kinds of interesting people.
Present day: Do you have a consistent bedtime routine? If so, walk us through it.
I take my contacts off, clean my face, moisturize, brush my teeth, lately I’ve been rubbing sweet almond oil on my belly and then I try to read for a bit, until my eyes can’t stay open anymore (doesn’t take that long these days!).
Left, right, or middle of the bed?
I’ve slept on the right side of the bed for years, but we recently just switched sides now that I’m pregnant so that I’m closer to the bathroom, and also we’re going to put the crib on the left side of the bed and my husband doesn’t feel like breastfeeding so, fine, I guess I’ll do it. Big changes ahead!
What’s the strangest dream you’ve ever had?
I have a lot of strange dreams! I wish I slept like a rock and didn’t remember my dreams, but instead I tend to have very intense, exhausting and pointless dreams where I’ll be working in a toy factory all night for example, or trying to catch a plane but I can’t find my suitcase, etc. In one very weird but very cool dream I had recently, I played the outfield for the Mets and I was actually inexplicably good at it.
What’s your favorite TV show to binge watch in bed?
We don’t watch TV in bed unless one of us is sick, last time that happened we binged on The Knick, it was amazing.
