In Bed With Jen Rubio

Aug 01, 2016 | by Lindsey James

Meet Jen Rubio. The Warby Parker alum founded Away, a chic travel brand built from true travel stories and exceptional materials, somehow snagged an Instagram handle with just her first name (see @jennifer) and has definitely been bit by the travel bug. We wanted to find out how this wanderer settles down during the rare occasions she finds herself at home, in her own bed.

Where do you live?

In Greenpoint. I’m new to Brooklyn!

What’s the one thing you can’t sleep without?

Gratitude. I fall asleep thinking of what I’m thankful for.

Describe all the things that make your bedroom your haven.

A massive fiddle-leaf fig tree (even though it’s seen better days), crisp white sheets, prints of photos taken by my friends, and little things from my travels: a kokeshi doll from Japan, a hand carved wooden map of the Congo, a jade elephant from Thailand

Do you have a consistent bedtime routine? If so, walk us through it.

My routines are stringent in the morning only. By bedtime, anything goes.

Left, right, or middle of the bed?

Top right to bottom left, like a forward slash.

What was your favorite bedtime story as a kid?

My brother and I would read Goosebumps before bed. Terrible idea.

What do you do if you can’t sleep?

Go out.

What’s the strangest dream you’ve ever had?

I’m taking anti-malaria pills right now and have been having night terrors every night. I can’t remember them, but they’re extremely unpleasant.

Where do you keep your phone while you sleep?

In the other room. I have a strict “no screens in the bedroom” rule!
